Border control officers stopped a tractor crossing into Texas and discovered more than a ton of marijuana concealed within a shipment of carrots in the vehicle's trailer.
A total of 2,817 carrot-shaped packages, complete with orange coloured wrapping, worth an estimated $499,000 were seized at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility in Texas.
Sniffer dogs were brought in after the vehicle was brought in for an imaging inspection, US Customs and Border Protection revealed (CBP).
Packages of marijuana were found hidden inside the bags of carrots.
Efrain Solis Jr, Port Director at the Pharr crossing, said: "Once again, drug smuggling organisations have demonstrated their creativity in attempting to smuggle large quantities of narcotics across the US/Mexico border.
"Our officers are always ready to meet those challenges and remain vigilant towards any type of illicit activities."
The case is being investigated by agents from Homeland Security Investigations.
Response:
I found this article to be an interesting read. It is really strange to me that people would go to extreme lengths to smuggle marijuana. I agree with what the reporter mentioned in the article when he said that the creativity of smuggling drugs is definitely increasing. I also think that people with such a high level of creativity could invest their talents into something more productive than smuggling drugs. Also they show a good amount of determination, which means they can do anything with their lives, if they just try. Anyway this article seems to be targeted to citizens of the US and also people who may be try to smuggle drugs in the future. It enlightens Americans that the drug war is not over, but people are being even sneakier. Also this article could be targeted at those who fight the law. It is raising self-awareness and can remind them to be alert. This article contains a slight bias against Mexico. It only perpetuates the stereotype that Mexicans only bring drugs into America. Also the headline is estimated to $500k which dramatizes the article even though that is not the exact amount.
